A talk with
Nelson Mandela’s Prison Guard – Christo Brand
How would you like the opportunity to listen to a talk by Nelson Mandela’s Prison Guard Christo Brand? Christo arrived on Robben Island, where Mandela was being held, in 1978 when he was 19 years old. In 1982 he was transferred along with Mandela to Pollsmoor Prison. Christo and Mandela developed a close friendship over the course of many years.
Christo Brand is the co-author of his book, Doing Life with Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend (2014) and he shares his fascinating story of the close friendship between a prison warden and a prisoner serving a life sentence.
For those who would like to spend a bit more time with Christo, why not join him for lunch or dinner and hear him bring to life more of the stories and insights into the life of Nelson Mandela. During the course of the meal, Christo will share his unique story from when he grew up on a farm, moved to the city at the age of 12, joined the prison service after Matric (final year of high school), was sent to Robben Island at the age of 19 and met Nelson Mandela for the first time. Then how their relationship grew and developed through a mutual respect and trust for each other.
Christo will share fascinating insights into the life of Mandela from Prisoner to President – and how the two men stayed in touch until Mandela passed away and Christo was a guest of the family at his funeral.
This is truly a unique tale to hear. The story of a young, white, Afrikaans speaking warder who befriended an elderly, black, Xhosa speaking prisoner. Two men who should have hated each other but instead became close friends.
