Wildlife in the Republic of Congo: What to expect

The Republic of Congo, often overshadowed by its larger neighbour, the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a hidden gem for wildlife enthusiasts. Its vast swathes of tropical rainforest, rivers and wetlands are part of the Congo Basin, the second-largest rainforest in the world. This biodiversity hotspot is home to some of Africa’s most elusive and unique species, offering a wildlife experience that feels raw and untamed.

Iconic wildlife

The Republic of Congo is one of the best places in the world to see western lowland gorillas in their natural habitat. These gorillas thrive in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, where guided treks offer unparalleled opportunities to observe them up close. Forest elephants, smaller and more secretive than their savannah cousins, roam the dense jungles of Congo. They can often be spotted at forest clearings known as bais, where they gather to drink and socialise. Mbeli Bai in Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park is a prime location to see them. Chimpanzees also inhabit the forests, particularly in areas like Conkouati-Douli National Park, while African grey parrots add splashes of colour and sound to the canopy.

Unique species

The Republic of Congo’s rainforests are home to a wealth of unique species. The shy and solitary bongo antelope, with its striking chestnut coat and white stripes, is a highlight for those lucky enough to spot one. Other rare mammals include the slender-snouted crocodile and the dwarf crocodile, both found in the region’s waterways. Birdlife is equally rich, with species like the Congo serpent eagle and the African green broadbill thriving in the dense forests.

Birds and aquatic life

Birdwatchers will find much to love in the Republic of Congo, which boasts more than 600 bird species. The lush forests are alive with calls from turacos, hornbills, and parrots. Wetlands and riverbanks support species like African jacanas, egrets, and kingfishers, while migratory birds add to the diversity during certain seasons. The Republic of Congo’s rivers, particularly the Congo River and its tributaries, teem with aquatic life. Hippopotamuses and crocodiles are commonly seen, while the waterways also support numerous fish species that sustain local communities. Along the Atlantic coast, Conkouati-Douli National Park protects important habitats for marine turtles, including leatherbacks and olive ridleys.

Endangered wildlife

The Republic of Congo is home to some of Africa’s most endangered and elusive wildlife, with vast rainforests providing refuge for species at risk. The western lowland gorilla, found in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, faces severe threats from poaching and habitat destruction. The forest elephant is also under pressure from illegal ivory trade. The Bonobo, one of humanity’s closest relatives, is increasingly rare due to hunting. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensuring these species survive for future generations.

Something different

One of the most distinctive wildlife experiences in the Republic of Congo is visiting a bai – a natural forest clearing that attracts wildlife like gorillas, elephants and antelope. Observing these animals as they interact in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience. Odzala-Kokoua National Park offers an immersive rainforest adventure, with opportunities to trek through pristine jungle, paddle along rivers, and stay in eco-lodges that blend luxury with sustainability. For marine wildlife enthusiasts, the beaches of Conkouati-Douli are a nesting ground for sea turtles, and boat tours provide chances to see dolphins and other marine life.
