Amplify your impact

Your safari already makes a difference. Here's how to make it even more meaningful

Empower your journey

In our youth, travel feels like pure adventure. We move freely, chasing new landscapes and cultures, dropping a coin in a donation box or buying a local trinket, but our journeys are largely about us and the sheer thrill of it all. We remained somewhat detached, more like transient observers!

With time, perspective shifts.

Whether it’s age or experience, the privilege of travel slowly reveals itself along the sheer magnitude of our presence. We begin to see that travel can harm but also heal. That the places we pass through are not a backdrop to our adventure but living, breathing communities whose futures are shaped, in part, by the choices we make as visitors.

We believe every safari is a chance to move beyond footprints in the sand.

Your journey already sparks change through our Hearten Africa giving programme and our carefully chosen partners. But if you want to go further, here are three simple, meaningful ways to amplify your impact.

And if you would rather leave it entirely in our hands, that is completely fine too. By travelling with us, you are already making a difference.

Amplify your impact #1:

Contribute to local economies

One of the most direct ways to support the communities you visit is also one of the most enjoyable: spend locally and spend intentionally.

Choose handmade over mass-produced. A handwoven basket from Botswana, vibrant textiles from Zambia, jewellery crafted by a Nairobi artisan. Each purchase flows directly to the maker and their family – not to a factory or an import business.

How to do it:

Seek out local markets
Explore the markets in the cities and villages you visit. Our ground guides will get you there safely and make sure you have a genuinely good time. Victoria Falls, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Rwanda’s mountain villages – each has its own character and its own makers worth meeting.

Choose artisans at your lodge
Many of the camps and lodges we recommend stock locally made goods – jewellery, pottery, textiles that reflect the region’s heritage. These purchases support local producers just as directly as the markets do.

Ask questions
Engage with the people you are buying from. Ask about their work, their materials, and their community. Those conversations are often the most memorable part of the experience – and they matter to the people having them.

Travelling with children?
Give them a market challenge. Fifty minutes and fifty dollars to spend however they choose – with one condition: they come back with what they bought and the story of the person they bought it from. It is how the Encompass Africa team shops with our own families. It works every time.

Your itinerary will highlight local markets and artisan opportunities in the regions you are visiting, making it easy to shop with intention rather than impulse.

Amplify your impact #2:

Make a thoughtful donation

In Africa, every dollar counts. Whether it is two dollars or two thousand, contributions to grassroots organisations fund projects that uplift communities, protect wilderness and conserve wildlife in ways that government budgets and international aid rarely reach.

Two simple ways to give:

Donate money to a recognised cause
You can donate directly when you visit, or we can facilitate it on your behalf through our Hearten Africa partner organisations. We will point you toward the right projects for the regions you are travelling through.

Donate essential items
Pack a bundle of items that communities genuinely need – clean, good quality second-hand clothing, books, stationery, sports equipment, medical supplies or personal hygiene products. These donations deliver immediate, tangible support: equipping a school, stocking a clinic, outfitting a community garden.

We will connect you with the right projects for your itinerary so your contributions reach the people who need them most.

In 2024, one of our groups visited a school in Tanzania carrying stationery crafted by an Arusha-based business we work with. They met the artisans who made it, then the teachers and children who received it. What followed was a tour, an impromptu song and tears on both sides.

That is what a thoughtful donation looks like in practice.

Pack for a purpose

We partner with Pack for a Purpose – founded by Rebecca Rothney in 2010 on the simple idea of making a difference one suitcase at a time. Pack for a Purpose connects your donations directly to community projects at the lodges and camps on your itinerary, ensuring every item has a specific, traceable impact.

Amplify your impact #3:

Volunteer your time and skills

Some of the most profound moments our travellers describe have nothing to do with wildlife.

They spent the afternoon painting a school in Tanzania. The morning planting trees in Botswana. The photography lesson shared with a group of children who had never held a camera. The community garden unveiled by a village that worked alongside visitors to build it.

Volunteering or simply visiting a community initiative connects you to locals, to nature and often to yourself in ways that a game drive – extraordinary as it is – simply cannot replicate.

How we make it work:

We match volunteer opportunities to your itinerary, your interests and the time you have available. Whether it is a single afternoon or several days, we find genuinely useful projects – not performative, not staged for photographs, but real work that real communities have asked for help with.

Teaching. Conservation monitoring. Construction. Environmental restoration. Community health. The options are as varied as the continent itself.

In 2024, Encompass Africa travellers contributed over 500 volunteer hours across the continent – transforming childcare centres, schools, wildlife populations and wilderness areas from Tanzania to Botswana.

A moment worth sharing:

Picture the smiles of Tanzanian students as you share a photography lesson. The pride of a Botswana community unveiling a new garden. The San Bushmen of the Kalahari sharing knowledge that has been passed down for ten thousand years.

These moments forge connections that last long after your safari ends. Your time, paired with our curated projects, ensures every contribution resonates – and becomes part of the story you bring home.

Every journey is an opportunity.

Africa gives generously to everyone who visits. The landscapes. The wildlife. The perspective. The quiet recalibration of what matters. These three pathways are simply our invitation to give something back – in whatever way feels right for you, your family and your journey.

There is no obligation and no pressure. But in our experience, the travellers who engage most deeply with the places they visit always come home with the most to say.
