Visiting Giraffe Manor

A dream realised – Visiting Giraffe Manor

You’ve seen the photos. Those surreal, almost fairytale-like moments where a giraffe gracefully stretches its neck through a grand manor window, nibbling treats straight from a guest’s hand or off a plate on the table. It seems almost too magical to be real. You imagine yourself looking stylish sipping tea with these gentle creatures gracefully coming through the window. Giraffe Manor is certainly not a mirage—it’s an experience unlike any other. And for us, it was a long-held dream come true.

This place is certainly no ordinary hotel. Set within 12 acres of private land in Nairobi’s Langata suburb, it offers a stay steeped in history, charm, and the most extraordinary wildlife interaction imaginable. The manor dates back to the 1930s, when European travellers first flocked to East Africa for safari adventures. Today, it’s owned by our friends at The Safari Collection and has become one of the most sought-after stays in the world. But what truly sets it apart is its resident Rothschild’s giraffes—a rare and endangered species that have been carefully protected and nurtured here for decades.

Staying at Giraffe Manor isn’t just about luxury—it’s about immersion. From the moment we arrived, the anticipation built. The staff welcomed us warmly, and as we stepped out of the vehicle onto the grounds, we spotted our first giraffe ambling across the lawn.

That afternoon was high tea and feeding time. Trepidation kicked in for all of us and we were slowly coaxed into approaching the giraffe with pellets in hand.

With giraffe ears on, Grace went in and soon summoned me to join. It was such fun, we laughed and squealed with glee as this long bluish black tongue came out in search of pellets. It was a little scratchy on the skin and if you weren’t careful you’d feel it wrapping around your hand!

The afternoon was really special, so was the dinner laid out for us. But getting a good sleep was important not only to kick jetlag, but get ready for the piste de la resistance.. Am I saying that right?

And then came breakfast—the moment everyone dreams of. Sitting at a sun-drenched table, we watched in awe as long, elegant necks stretched through the windows, eyes blinking curiously, awaiting their morning treats.

It was thrilling, a little overwhelming, and utterly unforgettable.

There were screams of delight, spilt juice, fruit platters scattered and literally over 180 photos!

How to visit the giraffes

Of course, an overnight stay at Giraffe Manor doesn’t come cheap. The exclusivity, the setting, and the intimate wildlife interaction all come at a premium. Your next obstacle is availability. There are limited rooms available just as Giraffe Manor. But if we book you into another property within The Safari Collection, you’re prioritised and almost guaranteed access to a room at Giraffe Manor (availability pending of course). So just give yourself ample lead time to ensure we can get you in!

But for those who still want to experience the magic without the hefty price tag, there’s another option—the Giraffe Centre, located right next door. This conservation center, open to day visitors, offers the chance to hand-feed these magnificent creatures and learn about the ongoing efforts to protect the Rothschild’s giraffe population. It’s an incredible way to connect with these gentle giants while supporting their future survival at a fraction of the price. We’ve got great local guides who can pick you up from your hotel, take you here and then to Daphne Sheldrick’s to see the elephants and learn of their stories and quest to get them back into the wild.

For us, visiting Giraffe Manor was more than just ticking off a bucket-list experience—it was about sharing something truly special with our children. Watching their wide-eyed wonder as a giraffe nuzzled in close, feeling the sheer size and gentleness of these creatures up close, and learning about the importance of conservation made this trip one we will never forget.

It was also rather funny seeing the kids on a swing and as they swung towards the giraffe they gave he or she a pellet. One nipped Aidan because he couldn’t get the pellet. Now for a mum, that was funny! News flash, 11 year old charged for teasing giraffe and bitten for it!

If you’re dreaming of a stay where the wildlife comes to you, Giraffe Manor is special. And if a stay isn’t on the cards, the Giraffe Centre ensures that everyone gets to experience the magic of these incredible animals.

Whether towering over the savanna or journeying through the wilderness, giraffes are nothing short of extraordinary.
