(And why it’s worth every cent)
What I know for sure is that safaris are life-changing. But let’s talk about the elephant in the room, what does a safari actually cost?
It’s one of the most common questions we get, and we completely understand why. Planning a safari can feel mysterious, a world away from booking a beach resort or a European city escape. The truth is, the cost of an African safari depends on so many factors: flights, accommodation, location, season, guides, park fees, even aircraft transfers.
So, let’s break it down. Because when you understand what’s behind the numbers, it all starts to make sense.
Getting there: the reality of air travel from Australia
There’s no sugar-coating it, air travel from Australia to Africa is expensive.
Post-COVID, airfares have risen and unlike Europe or the USA, where multiple carriers compete on pricing, accessing Africa is still limited by a few key hubs and long-haul connections from Australia.
That’s why at Encompass Africa, we offer two distinct services, a tailored safari service and a flight booking service.
Airlines no longer pay commissions, and we don’t mark up flights. Quoting and managing air tickets takes time and we value that time, both ours and yours. So rather than spending hours doing work for free, we charge AUD150 per person up front for the flight booking service, this involves quoting, booking, issuing and ticketing airfares (international and regional).
Then our specialists can really focus on the part that matters most, designing your dream safari to Africa.
Our process: expertise, not guesswork
We start with a complimentary obligation-free safari briefing. It’s our way of listening, learning what you dream of, your must-sees, your budget, your fears, your wish list.
From there, we offer up to two proposal itineraries, crafted personally for you.
If you’re still exploring after that, we charge a Design Fee of AUD 500. And here’s the key: that fee is deducted from your safari cost when you book.
Why do we do it this way? Because expertise deserves respect.
We no longer live in a world where specialists should work for free. Architects, designers, consultants, their time has value. So does ours.
When you choose to work with Encompass Africa, you’re not just paying for a trip. You’re investing in decades of knowledge, relationships, and insight that ensure your safari runs seamlessly.
What’s included: land arrangements explained
Once you land in Africa, your safari begins, and this is where your money goes.
Every journey is unique, but a few core costs shape your safari:
Accommodation: City stays (like Cape Town, Victoria Falls etc) are usually bed and breakfast or room only if you go for an apartment, so this can help manage costs before you head out on safari. Once you’re on safari, most camps and lodges are full board or fully inclusive, with meals, drinks, share activities, park fees, and transfers often bundled together.
National Park, Conservation, and Concession Fees: These funds go directly to preserving wildlife and supporting local communities. It’s one of the most important aspects of responsible travel and there’s no way around it.
Activities and guiding: This is the heart of your experience, the people who bring the wilderness to life.
Transport in and around Africa: Safari camps and lodges are often remote, so you’ll need scheduled or chartered light aircraft, road transfers, or private vehicles to reach them.
So… How much should you budget?
Years ago we said you could expect an affordable safari for around AUD500 to AUD800 per person per day. Today, that’s changed. Prices have risen, and quality has too.
You can still find beautiful, authentic safaris, but the price range has pushed up. So for an affordable safari, expect to pay closer to AUD 1,000–1,500 per person per day, and luxury safaris can easily reach several thousand per person per night.
That’s why it’s essential to share at least a ballpark budget when you enquire. Without that guidepost, we’re flying blind. A budget helps us tailor your itinerary properly, ensuring every dollar works hard for your experience. And you don’t get a nasty shock when you see the price tag on the proposal!
True meaning of value
Value is not about the cheapest safari. It’s about getting the most out of your investment.
That comes down to timing, priorities, and expertise.
Timing: You can travel in shoulder or low season to get better rates and have fewer crowds.
Priorities: Decide what matters most to you, is it designer decor, remoteness, adventure activities, wildlife density.
Guides: This is the secret ingredient to an unforgettable safari. You won’t remember the colour of the cushions, but you’ll never forget the guide who laughed with you, taught you about tracking lions, or shared stories by the campfire.
Great guides are passionate, patient, and deeply connected to the land. On mobile safaris, you’ll share days, even weeks together. You’ll eat, laugh, learn, and often cry saying goodbye.
That’s the kind of connection money can’t buy, and the kind that defines a truly exceptional safari.
Making your money work for you
When you plan a safari, it’s not as easy as just booking a room. There’s extensive logistics to consider to keep you safe, the holiday flowing and the experience effortless. Not to mention you’re investing in conservation, local jobs, and life-changing experiences.
Tap into special offers, long-stay discounts, and combination deals, and work with someone who knows how to find them. That’s what we do best.
We take the time to understand you, your dreams, your boundaries, your bucket list and craft a safari that reflects you.
Because you’re not a deli number waiting for your turn.
You’re the heart of this epic adventure.
Cost of a safari? So in the end…
What I know for sure is that safaris aren’t just holidays, they’re journeys of connection, conservation, and self-discovery.
And when you work with a team (like ours) that’s passionate, professional, and personal, every cent becomes an investment in something far greater:
a story you’ll carry for life.
So when you’re ready, let’s start the conversation.
