Seeing Africa through a child’s eyes is nothing short of magical. Every game drive brings a new surprise, the thrill of spotting elephants at sunrise, the laughter as zebras gallop past, the wonder of hearing a lion’s roar echo across the plains as the sun sets on the horizon.
A family safari holiday in Africa is more than your average holiday. It’s a shared adventure filled with wildlife, learning, laughter, and moments you’ll talk about for years. For kids, it’s a chance to discover the wild world, and for parents, it’s an opportunity to slow down and experience it alongside them.
While safari is always the focus, there’s heaps on offer for families with beach babies too! Take a look at our page on beach babies>
What to expect with kids on safari:
The excitement
Wildlife encounters
Kids will be absolutely captivated by Africa’s animals. From spotting a pride of lions lounging in the shade to following giraffe tracks in the dust, every moment on safari feels like stepping into a storybook. The thrill of the bush inspires curiosity and respect for nature.
Education and inspiration
A safari is an unforgettable classroom. Children learn about ecosystems, animal behaviour, and the importance of conservation, all while meeting local guides and communities who share their deep connection to the land. It’s travel that teaches, inspires, and stays with them long after they return home.
Engaging activities
Depending on the camp or lodge, activities may include spotting the Big Five, learning to track animals, bush walks (for older kids), photography, art, and even keeping a safari journal. Some lodges offer Junior Ranger programs, treasure hunts, or nature-based games that turn learning into pure fun.
Family-friendly lodges
Many safari lodges are designed with families in mind, offering kid’s clubs, play areas, flexible mealtimes, and connecting rooms or family tents. Some even have adventure centres or gentle walking trails perfect for little explorers.
Campfire moments
Evenings in the bush are truly special, roasting marshmallows, listening to guides’ stories, and stargazing under the African night sky. It’s here that families connect, unwind, and reflect on the adventures of the day.
Dream like sleepouts
If you’ve got adventurous kids, there’s ample adventure in store, from treehouses to sleep in, mobile tents (age restrictions) to name a few. And those beach finales to your safari with kids…. just imagine Robinson Crusoe moments!.. it’s all possible when you take your family on safari in Africa!
What to expect with kids on safari:
the practicalities
Age considerations
Each lodge has its own policies regarding minimum ages for game drives or walking safaris. Some allow all ages with private vehicles, while others may have restrictions. We’ll guide you toward the best fit for your family. There’s everything from all inclusive, kids club, to remote mobile camps family friendly. Don’t forget there’s also malaria free options. Daily routine
Safari days often start early with morning game drives, followed by downtime in the middle of the day to rest or swim, and then another adventure in the late afternoon. It’s a rhythm that works beautifully once you settle into the pace of the bush.
Snacks, hydration and energy
Game drives can be long and exciting, so pack favourite snacks and water bottles. Lodges usually provide refreshments, but a few familiar nibbles can make kids feel at home on the move. If you run out of your own supplies remember to ask the kitchen for some snacks to go in the cooler box for game drives! We do and the kids are always grateful for the extra ‘child friendly’ nibbles. Also note if your kids don’t drink soft drink you need to request juice as they don’t often have individual juice boxes or bottles.
Journals and binoculars
Encourage kids to bring binoculars and a notebook. Spotting animals, sketching them, or jotting down fun facts helps them engage deeply, and those journals become treasured keepsakes. We provide you a checklist which can be printed out and a great tool!
Comfort is key
African days can be warm and sunny, so light, breathable clothing, hats, and sunscreen are essential. Avoid dark colours like navy or black, as they can attract insects such as tsetse flies. Comfort makes a big difference in how much everyone enjoys the experience.
Safety first
Your guide’s instructions are there to keep everyone safe. Always stay in the vehicle during drives, walk close to your guide in camp, and keep a respectful distance from animals and waterholes. Africa’s wildlife is magnificent and wild, so awareness is key.
