Arambrook Boutique Hotel location
A retreat of quiet luxury, tucked away in one of the leafier streets of Bishopscourt, amongst poplar trees and on the banks of the Liesbeek River. Kirstenbosch Gardens is accessible on foot from the property or guests can go for a jog along the river, which flows down to the sea from the mountain peaks of the Cape Peninsula.
If it’s peace and calm you’re looking for, this is it. Bishopscourt is a verdant suburb, very close to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. Devoted to South Africa’s indigenous flora, it sprawls across the eastern flank of Table Mountain and its array of plants, the restaurant and café, and its walks are easily accessible from the Arambrook.
It’s a great base from which to explore the deep South, it’s wine route and to visit the region’s most historic farms, of which Groot Constantia is the country’s oldest. The False Bay coast isn’t far away either. Between them, Muizenberg, St James and Kalk Bay offer surfing, safe swimming, fish restaurants and a whole host of bric-a-brac shops and Saturday morning markets.
It’s a different take on a stay in Cape Town but one that won’t disappoint.
Style/decor
This large, comfortable, well-upholstered mansion epitomises a quiet sense of style and luxury. The interiors are elegantly decorated from its bathrooms, sitting areas and private terrace. There’s a collection of contemporary South African art and furniture and the service is immaculate.
Rooms at Arambrook Boutique Hotel
There are eight suites that look out over well-manicured gardens punctuated by crisp lawns and rose arbours. An orchard and the kitchen garden, part ornamental, part pragmatic provide seasonal vegetables, herbs and fruit for the kitchen. The styling is up-to-the-minute in a Christian Liaigre way, with smoky colours of the décor offset with a highlight palette of dusky crayfish orange and deep-sea navy, sultry tobacco and baby blue. Light fittings, fabrics, furniture and upholstery are clean and contemporary. Heaps of books, sculpture and bowls of fresh flowers complete the look.
Two rooms are located downstairs, one of which offers disabled access, and 6 further bedrooms are to be found upstairs. Ari, the “presidential suite”, is vast and features a very secluded bathroom and private terrace with views out over a private woodland (soon to be converted into a series of ten more rooms).
Rose, Jaryd, Aran, Lucy are superior king suites while Amelia, Emily and Joseph are the slightly smaller, but nonetheless superior queen suites.
Quietly luxurious, each is individually private although, I think this property would also work perfectly for exclusive use. It’s a great space for a family holiday with oodles of areas to camp out and enjoy.
Top tips for Arambrook Boutique Hotel
There is an onsite chef, Stacey Chan who oversees the kitchen. She’s also the brand chef for SMEG. Signature dishes have earned her critical acclaim and awards including Best Young Chef of the year at the Chain des Rotisseurs in 2010. So make sure you eat in a few times.
Equally impressive is their in-house cellar featuring some of the Cape’s finest labels. Its provenance is guaranteed by hotel manager Aubrey Ngcungama, founder of The Black Cellar, a group of sommeliers and winemakers passionate about local wineries.
He is a well-known wine fundi and also available to escort guests to the Constantia Winelands. So you don’t need to book a wine tour! Simply liaise with Aubrey when you’re here.
The pool is amongst beautiful gardens separate from the main house with its own building that features a fully stocked bar to up the ante on pool side lounging. So for summer this place is something else!
