GUEST REVIEW

“I’d go back to Saruni Samburu tomorrow”

Narelle Connor and her husband Robert, from Canberra, travelled to Africa in 2023 and visited Botswana, Zimbabwe and  Kenya. Here, Narelle tells us about one of their absolute highlights: Saruni Samburu in Kenya

After a wonderful stay on the Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls, we flew right up to the north of Kenya, to the Samburu area.

Oh my God, it was just stunning. We stayed at Saruni Samburu and it was unbelievable. We stayed in a luxury stone and canvas structure – there were just six of them and each one was like a little lodge. They were located on top of a hill and had the most spectacular views. We’d sit out on our deck and just look down on the plains and see elephants walking through, and baboons and other animals. It was just the most amazing place. We felt as if we were really in Africa.

We did every game drive that we could. Sometimes, if the wildlife viewing was really good, we’d leave at 6am and wouldn’t come back in until midday. I came home to Australia for a sleep! I think next time I would also like to do a bit of a walking safari rather than just doing game drives every morning and afternoon. But we absolutely loved it, and the trackers were just amazing. How they knew where to find those animals… but they did! We couldn’t have asked for anything better.

We also did a scorpion safari at Samburu, and one night we had a bush dinner with the Masai people and got to know one of the elders who told us all about Masai culture and traditions. The whole experience was just wonderful.

I’d go back to Saruni Samburu tomorrow. But I’d definitely stay for four night instead of three!
