Bushwalking and fly camping Kenya

posted 17th June 2019 by Danica Wilson in Work in progress

Modern day explorers seek reward in new experiences and nothing beats bush walking and fly camping Kenya style. So what are you waiting for?

The Government of Kenya recently introduced a new biometric licence that is required for all holders of large calibre firearms which are legally required to be carried when they are offering guests bush walking and fly camping experiences. This means a few properties have suspended bushwalking and fly camping in Kenya until they can get up to speed with the new regulations (once licences are received).

Don’t fret though, you can still bush walk and fly camp all over the country with the following properties fully licensed ready to go!

See the lists below…

Amboseli

Walking is not actually allowed inside Amboseli National Park. It is offered in the conservancies that border Amboseli National Park. The beauty is walks are conducted by local Maasai who explain the way of local culture, life and show you the tracks of animals and talk about the wildlife big and small.

Right now we love the walks done at:

  1. Elewana Tortilis Camp
  2. Satao Elerai
  3. Porini Amboseli Camp

Samburu, Shaba, Sera  & Buffalo Springs

These four regions are in Northern Kenya and offer the visitor some of the most spectacular scenery and opportunities to walk.  Check out the video below to see the magic and hear the conservation story!

  1. Elephant Watch Camp
  2. Saruni Samburu
  3. Saruni Rhino
  4. Sasaab

Masai Mara

Bushwalking and fly camping in Kenya’s Masai Mara is a true adventure.  This is not allowed in the actual Masa Mara National Reserve, it’s done in the conservancies that border it. You’ll head off on foot with highly trained and skilled Maasai guides who explain the way of the Maasai culture displaying their skills in animal tracking and sharing fascinating stories as you go.

  1. Angama Mara
  2. Elewana Elephant Pepper Camp
  3. Little Governor’s Camp
  4. Richard’s River Camp
  5. Saruni Mara & Wild
  6. Serian
  7. Il Moran Camp
  8. Ngare Serian
  9. Hemingways Ol Seki Mara
  10. Sanctuary Olonana
  11. Cottar’s 1920’s Safari Camp

Laikipia region

Laikipia is more off the beaten track as a bush walking and fly camping Kenya destination. It offers spectacular scenery, a wonderful culture with traditional pastoral life and of course an impressive array of wildlife. Only the Masai Mara boasts more game. Laikipia is home to the big five, wild dogs and rate aquatic Sitatunga antelope. It’s also home to 25% of the rare Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe plus Somali ostrich and healthy predator populations of lion, cheetah and leopard.

Some of our favourites are Karisia Walking Safaris (photographs below) and more recently, Walking Wild. It is what it says ‘on the tin’… a wild walk through some of Laikipia  Maasai land’s most spectacular wilderness. Bushwalking here is all about experiencing the wild in a manner that’s truly nomadic. You walk and you sleep  out in dome tents plus of course meals and rinks are provided and enjoyed outdoors.  The terrain can vary so difficult landscapes see camels used to carry provisions.  Your professional Maasai guides really make it special for guests. You are taught to track animals, identify species of flora and fauna, understand behaviour of certain insects, birds and animals to name a few!
