The glamour of a game drive

A real safari adventure

There’s something undeniably magical about going on a game drive, an experience that really does blend raw nature, thrilling encounters, and moments of pure serenity. Whether you’re a budget traveller or indulging in an uber-luxe safari, a game drive is a journey into the heart of the wild, guided by the skill and instinct of your guide. So we want to share with you the reasons we think going on a game drive is an adventure like no other…

Sunrise: The world awakens

As dawn breaks, the African bush stirs to life. You climb into the open-sided vehicle, the cool morning air brushing your skin, and set off as the first rays of sunlight pierce the horizon. Mist clings to the grass, swirling gently as the landscape brightens, revealing a canvas of golden hues and soft shadows. The wildlife is waking, antelopes graze cautiously, birds erupt in a chorus of calls, and the earth itself seems to hum with anticipation. It’s a moment of quiet awe, where the world feels fresh and alive.

The thrill of the chase

The game drive is as much about the journey as the destination. Your guide, often accompanied by a tracker perched at the vehicle’s front, reads the bush like an open book. A bent blade of grass, a faint paw print, or a distant call—they piece together clues with impressive knowledge and instinct. Suddenly, the vehicle veers off the path, and your heart races as you track a leopard slinking through the undergrowth or a herd of elephants moving silently through the trees. Seeing wildlife in their natural habitat, undisturbed and majestic, is a thrill that never fades.

Morning coffee with a twist

Mid-morning, the vehicle pauses in a scenic spot, and out comes the coffee—piping hot, rich, and aromatic. For a touch of holiday indulgence, your guide might pour a shot of Amarula, the creamy, South African liqueur that adds a playful kick to the moment. You sip, laugh, and soak in the view, feeling like you’re living in a postcard. Because why not? You’re on holiday, and this is the time to savour life’s little luxuries right?

Stories from the bush

As you sip your drink, your guide shares stories—tales of close encounters, ancient traditions, or the quirky behaviours of the animals you’re tracking. Their knowledge is encyclopedic, their passion absolutely infectious. It’s why they call it the Africa bug… If you’re lucky enough to have a tracker, their intuitive connection to the land adds another layer of magic. They spot what you’d never see, from a chameleon blending into a branch to the faint trail of a lion. These moments, woven with their insights, make the experience deeply personal and unforgettable.

Afternoon: the hunt begins

As the day progresses, the mood shifts. The afternoon light bathes the landscape in warmer tones, and you may notice the predators preparing for the evening hunt. Whether it’s dogs or cats, they grow restless, eyes sharp (much like their teeth) and focused. You might spot a cheetah scanning the plains or a pride of lions stretching in the shade, readying for action. The colours of the sunset – fiery oranges, deep purples, and soft pinks – paint the sky, and the vehicle stops at a picture-perfect spot for sundowner drinks. A gin and tonic or a chilled glass of wine in hand, you toast to the beauty of the moment, surrounded by nature’s grandeur.

The vehicle: your window to the wild

Game drive vehicles are as varied as the landscapes they traverse. Open-sided ones bring you thrillingly close to nature, while pop-top roofs offer 360-degree views. Some are custom-built with clever pockets for storing binoculars, ledges for leaning to snap that perfect photo, and even charging stations for your devices. Do be prepared to step up, even climb though, because getting in and out can be a bit of an adventure, especially with higher vehicles. Many have stairs to access and help is always at hand.  You’ll discover as you travel that each camp or region has its own style of vehicle, from rugged and practical to sleek and luxurious, but they all share one purpose: to immerse you in the wild, getting you close to the action but not too close!

Nightfall: a different world

As twilight fades, the night drive begins, revealing a hidden side of the bush. With the engine off, the sounds of the wild surround you, distant roars, the eerie whoop of a hyena, or the rustle of unseen creatures. Your guide’s spotlight sweeps the darkness, catching the shining eyes of a bush baby or the slow, deliberate movement of a chameleon. Nocturnal species come to life, and the stars above blaze in a way only an African night sky can. The absence of city lights, paired with the symphony of nature, creates an experience that’s both humbling and exhilarating.

The heart of the game drive

Whether you’re in a no-frills vehicle or a luxury rig, the true essence of a game drive lies in the quality of your guide. Their expertise, passion, and ability to read the bush transform a simple drive into a story you’ll recount for years. From the sunrise mist to the starlit night, a game drive is a sensory journey—a blend of thrill, beauty, and connection to the wild. But the art of guiding? That’s a story for another day.
