Tanzania’s new inbound travel insurance: What you need to know
If you are planning a Tanzania safari new entry requirement comes into place from 1 October 2026.
Visitors entering mainland Tanzania will need compulsory inbound travel insurance. The requirement applies at airports, seaports and land borders. Obviously Zanzibar introduced this regulation over a year ago, so now it begs the question, which insurance do you need?
The answer… it depends on where you first enter Tanzania.
- Mainland Tanzania first: Buy insurance from the National Insurance Corporation (NIC). You won’t need separate Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) insurance if you travel on to Zanzibar. Visit the official site here>
- Zanzibar first: Buy ZIC insurance. You won’t need to buy NIC insurance if you later travel to the mainland. Visit the official site >
The policy costs USD44 per visitor and is valid for up to 92 days. We recommend arranging it before departure and keeping your certificate handy for arrival checks.
The insurance is expected to provide cover for:
- Emergency medical treatment
- Medical evacuation
- Repatriation of a patient
- Loss of baggage
- Coverage limits and claim conditions will be specified in the relevant insurance policy.
The requirement has been introduced through the 2026 Inbound Travellers Insurance Regulations, published in the Government Gazette under Government Notice No. 256.
