South Africa family adventure ideas

So you are seeking adventure for your children and unsure where to start? We always recommend South Africa as an ‘ease into Africa’ experience. In South Africa, there is such a diversity of experiences while on safari and when you go beyond the wilderness areas and explore the cosmopolitan cities and quaint towns.

Here we share two fantastic family friendly options for those seeking an affordable South Africa family safari.

Africa on Foot

Ideal for families with teenagers

This is big five territory and nestled in a private reserve called Klaserie. It’s in the heart of the Greater Kruger and wildlife abounds in this stunning wilderness area.

Africa on Foot is best for families with teenagers 16 + because one of the highlights is a walking safari. Game drives are also offered.

This is a family safari favourite of ours because there are just five chalets so it’s really intimate. Don’t miss a night or your entire stay in the treehouse!  Even though the camp is small, it has all the creature comforts kids love like a splash pool and camp fire.

Safari activities are conducted in the early morning with a wake up as early as 05h00 in summer. Then between 11h00 and 14h30 you have time to yourselves. This is great for families to reconnect, relax with a book, take a nap, have a dip in the pool and then head back up to main camp for late lunch.  Your afternoon activity begins around 15h30 and as the sun sets, you’ll find a scenic spot for ‘sundowners’ before returning to the lodge no later than 19h30 for dinner.

If you like the sound of this place for your teens, check out the virtual reality video (use your mouse or arrows to move the camera as you view).

Kambaku Safari Lodge

Ideal for families with little ones

This is a fantastic option for those families with younger children and Kambaku is the realisation of a dream owners Bryce and Nicola have long had. They welcome other families in to cherish the experience of being in the bush because it is where they are raising their own children. ‘We believe that safaris should be family adventures. Our children’s programme is aimed at educating and entertaining young minds. There is so much to see and learn.’  Stay for a few days and your children get the opportunity to become certified junior rangers! This is a worthy accomplishment for the future custodians of our precious wildlife and wilderness don’t you think?

This is a larger lodge with more rooms and facilities to cater for families with children of all ages. Children under 2 stay free, then there is a child rate 2 – 11 and over that it’s adult rate.  If your kids are under 4, you will require a private vehicle at an additional fee – worth every cent for the exclusive experience. There are outdoor activities for kids, in camp facilities and junior rangers. The chef happily works with you to plan meal times to suit your routine.
