A wilderness adventure like no other
Mobile safaris in Botswana are a far cry from the camping trips you may remember as a kid exploring areas of Australia! A mobile safari means your entire camp moves with you, offering a seamless journey through Botswana’s incredible wilderness areas that teem with wildlife.
But don’t worry—there’s no roughing it here. Our mobile safaris are fully serviced – that means you have your own dedicated local, knowledgeable guide and vehicle so you explore while another vehicle and your dedicated camp crew move with you and set up your tented rooms, ensuite bathrooms, and the main area, while also preparing delicious meals.
The best news is there’s two types of mobile safaris in Botswana to choose from:
- Private mobile safari: Perfect for families or groups of friends. You have your own guide, vehicle, and camp team, making it a personalised, exclusive adventure. We can even tailor the meals, drinks and activities to suit your travel party.
- Shared mobile safari: For the more social traveller, this option operates on set dates and includes up to 12 people. It’s a fantastic way to explore Botswana with like-minded adventurers at great value.
Whether private or shared, a mobile safari in Botswana promises an unforgettable experience, immersing you in some of Africa’s most pristine landscapes.
Let’s delve in a bit deeper…
Why a mobile safari in Botswana?
This is the most authentic safari experience because it is how the ‘safari’ concept kicked off in Kenya back in the 1920s. Deck chairs, canvas tents, campfire cooking and sleeping under the stars. They were shooting with guns back then, these days we just shoot with cameras.
So why a mobile safari in Botswana, let me share some of our top reasons why…
- Your mobile safari holiday is led by an outstanding, knowledgeable local guide who has extensive wilderness and wildlife training in Botswana
- You travel in a custom built 4×4 open sided vehicle to maximise wildlife viewing and comfort
- You have a team of attentive camp staff who are there to ensure your comfort, safety and satisfaction
- Meals are cooked for you, drinks even poured for you!
- You share stories around the campfire at night
- You fall asleep under the stars (or your canvas tent) to the sounds of the bush – be it grunting lions, hoot hooting Scops owls or grass munching hippos
Best time for mobile safaris in Botswana
Botswana is a year-round safari destination, where wildlife thrives regardless of the seasonal changes. So there really isn’t a ‘bad’ time to go for wildlife. What you need to think about water levels if you want to experience the traditional ‘mokoro’ safari – dug out canoes and of course temperatures and weather conditions.
Dry season is April to October and considered the ‘high’ season. It’s also when prices peak.
October is not for the faint hearted – literally… reason being is it’s the hottest month of the year. If you can stomach the heat – you’ll be rewarded because it’s the last throes of the dry season when wildlife is easier to spot congregating around permanent water sources.
November to March is ‘rainy’ season so it’s hot and humid with intermittent, downpours and thunderstorms usually in the late afternoons and evenings. But no rain, no gain!
We prefer to call this time of year the ‘green’ season because it turns the brown winter landscape into a glistening green haven that heralds new life. It’s also shoulder season with more affordable pricing and fewer tourists.
Mobile safaris in Botswana for wildlife
Botswana has exceptional wildlife all year round. We always just insist that any holiday to Botswana includes the Okavango Delta. Why? Well, if Botswana is Africa’s Garden of Eden, the Okavango Delta is its crown jewel—a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this lush wetland, surrounded by the arid Kalahari Desert, is a haven for wildlife.
It’s a predator stronghold, home to majestic lions, elusive leopards, and the rare African wild dogs also known as painted dogs. The vast wetland plains are teeming with game especially antelope and the unique species like red lechwe, sitatunga, and puku.
Beyond the Delta you’ll discover other worlds rich in wildlife, from the Makgadikadi Pans famous for its meerkats to the Chobe and its abundance of elephants!
We’ve got some fabulous mobile safaris in Botswana from affordable small group mobiles to luxury exclusive use mobiles where we have to fly you into the remotest reaches of the country by helicopter for the ultimate rewards.
