Important update

on recent Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) national park fee changes affecting upcoming safaris

Planning a safari in Kenya is one of life’s great adventures, and we are dedicated to ensuring our guests enjoy a seamless, memorable journey from beginning to end. Recently, however, a significant industry-wide issue has emerged in Kenya that affects all travellers visiting national parks and reserves. We want to provide clear, transparent information so you feel fully informed ahead of your trip.

What has happened with Kenya’s national park fees?

In October, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) announced an unexpected and immediate increase to national park fees. The change was introduced with only two days’ notice, leaving the tourism industry without adequate time to prepare or notify travellers.

In response, tourism operators in Kenya (so all of our partners) lodged a legal appeal, arguing that the sudden implementation was unreasonable. The courts agreed, placing a temporary moratorium on the fee increases.

However, despite the court’s ruling, KWS has continued to apply the higher fees and, more recently, added a new ticketing gateway charge of nearly 10%. This means operators across Kenya are being invoiced at these elevated rates for all upcoming guest visits to national parks and reserves.

How does this affect your Kenya safari?

At Encompass Africa, transparency is central to the way we work. We want to reassure all guests that we do not mark up park fees. Any additional amount requested from you as our guests has been charged to us by the Kenya Wildlife Service to deliver your safari in the national parks it manages. This is not a fee initiated or retained by Encompass Africa or our trusted partners on the ground.

These changes are outside our control, and like many operators, we had hoped the situation would resolve quickly following the court decision. Unfortunately, the increased fees remain in effect, and all safari operators must comply with the charges imposed.

Our commitment to you

We understand this situation is frustrating, particularly for guests who have already booked and paid for their Kenya safari months in advance. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and want you to know that we are here to support you every step of the way.

Our team is actively monitoring the situation, maintaining close communication with our Kenya partners, and ensuring all guests receive updated information promptly. Where applicable, guests will receive an updated invoice outlining the additional park fee component now required.

Your Kenyan safari remains in safe hands

While this KWS fee issue has created challenges across the entire tourism industry, it does not diminish the extraordinary safari experience awaiting you in Kenya. From those beautiful endless plains of the Masai Mara, the Kilimanjaro backdrop to Amboseli and the many colourful cultures like Samburu and Maasai, it really is one of Africa’s most iconic safari countries.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this rather frustrating development. If you have any questions or wish to discuss your itinerary, our team is always here to help.
