This unique tented camp decked out in 1920s decor is a true charmer and must for anyone seeking an Out of Africa experience. Set in more than 2,400 hectares of stunning wilderness, it’s a camp, but you won’t be roughing it – this is luxury under canvas. Ideal for couples, it’s also perfect for families thanks to the bush villa, essentially a private luxury home within the camp.
3. Kicheche Conservation Safari
Stay six nights, pay five
Valid: Throughout 2019
One of our all-time favourite owner-run camps is Kicheche. With smaller intimate tented camps in the greater Masai Mara and Laikipia regions, it provides a marvellous all-round Kenya safari holiday. Plus you can combine the properties and utilise the stay/pay specials.
4. Lewa Wilderness
Stay three nights, pay two | stay four pay three
Valid: 1-19 December 2019 and March 2020 (stay three nights, pay two); October 2019 and October 2020 (stay four nights, pay three)
A sensational wildlife conservancy in the Laikipia region of Northern Kenya, Lewa Wilderness welcomes all ages to stay in its colonial-style cottages. Home to three endangered species (rhino, Grévy’s zebra and sitatunga) and a diversity of activities, it’s ideal for a longer stay. You can game drive day and night, go on camel walks, horse riding, bush walking, visit prehistoric sites and a local village, and take a farm and craft tour. There’s a swimming pool and tennis court for the more active, or relax on a sofa overlooking the river with your favourite drink in hand. This is Kenya’s oldest and most private safari venture, and a family favourite.
5. Saruni Mara | Saruni Samburu
Stay Pay specials galore!
Valid: June, October, 1-11 December 2019
Another owner-run classic in Kenya, Saruni is a collection of deluxe, intimate safari lodges, with properties in both the Masai Mara and Samburu region. This gives great depth to the safari experience and to the diversity of landscapes, wildlife and activities you’ll enjoy. Stay four nights and pay three at Saruni Mara. Then combine the four nights and pay three offer also available at Saruni Samburu – so on an eight-night safari you’ll receive two nights free!
Saruni also combines beautifully with a stay at Lewa Wilderness. Take a look at our itinerary for inspiration.
6. Offbeat Mara
Stay eight nights, pay six | Stay four, pay three
Valid: All season (excluding 1 July – 30 September)
Located in the 74,000-acre Mara North Conservancy, this small and intimate camp boasts exceptional guides and excellent game viewing. It’s the ultimate traditional safari in the heart of the Masai Mara.
The stay four nights, pay three deal can be combined with the early bird discount (10% off), a family discount (the third child sharing a triple pays conservation fees only) and single supplement exception.
7. Sentinel Mara Camp
Stay five nights, pay four
Valid: 1 June – 14 July, 16-31 October, 1-19 December 2019 and 4 Jan – 30 April 2020
This is a brilliant non-permanent tented safari camp that’s set up each season in the forest along the banks of the Mara River. It truly is a little hidden gem and a wonderful vantage point from which to see the Masai Mara big cats including lion, leopard and cheetah. With just seven tents, it’s really intimate and the focus is on game drives in the Masai Mara, guided bush walks, and bird walks in the forest around the precincts of the camp. There’s a brilliant half-day walk along the escarpment with rewarding views that stretch for miles. You can visit the local village and also book an extra treat: a hot-air ballooning safari with a Champagne breakfast.
8. The Sanctuary at Ol Lentille
Stay four nights, pay three
Valid: Until 19 December 2019
Named after Ol Lentille, a nearby granite peak that rises to 1,977 metres, this stunning property is brilliant for those seeking something truly special. Straddling a boulder-strewn ridge, this is more like a luxury resort with spectacular decks, sun loungers, glamour beds and bathtubs.
It all started when the local Maasai community partnered with conservation tourism companies and private investors to transform more than 8,000 hectares of cattle range into a wildlife sanctuary.
These days, the lucky guests who visit get to explore the special wilderness in 4×4 vehicles, on mountain bikes and horseback. With just a handful of villas, it really is an exclusive luxury safari – and your own private butler takes care of your every need.
9. Kinondo Kwetu
Stay seven nights, pay six | stay five nights, pay four
Valid: Various times in the year
This is our kind of beach finale to any Kenya safari. Situated on the far end of the remote Galu Beach, you’re literally two kilometres away from any other hotel or property, so the beach is all yours. It’s a barefoot, casual kind of place and you’ll sit with your feet in the incoming tide. It’s more like a tropical garden oasis than a beach hotel, which is why it’s described as a boutique home away from home.
Ideal for families, there are five welcoming and tranquil cottages, each with its own style and decor. Activities on offer include horse riding, kite surfing, deep-sea fishing, stand-up paddle boarding, diving, snorkelling, sailing, canoeing and excursions to ‘Paradise Lost’ island.
10. Lantana Galu Beach
Stay four nights, pay three | stay seven, pay five
Valid: April – 7 July, September – 15 December 2019
This is a large property ideal for people wanting a polished offering and great beach location. It sits on Galu beach, one of the most unspoiled beaches on the Kenyan coast, just a few kilometres south of Diani.
The Swahili-inspired space beckons you to relax and its spacious suites boast all the creature comforts and luxury you’ll need to chill out. There are penthouse suites, two- and three-bedroom suites and three bedroom villas to choose from.
Expect great swimming pools and outdoor areas right on the beach, lovely restaurants and warm, friendly service – check out the video below.
