Taking the kids to Cape Town

Our top three hotels for 2020

The buzzing city of Cape Town attracts visitors of all ages from all over the world for good reason.  Whether you visit with toddlers or teenagers, there are some exceptional accommodation options to consider and we share our three favourites for 2020.

Luxury resort in the heart of the action

The One and Only Cape Town is an urban style resort in the heart of the V&A Waterfront. You can expect a great selection of rooms ideal for families of all ages. There are wonderful facilities onsite so you can simply relax without needing to ‘get out’ for the day.

The grounds are beautifully landscaped with two outdoor swimming pools. There are three restaurants onsite with decent menus for the fussiest of eaters.

What impresses us is the friendly staff and childcare team and facilities. Their emphasis is kids having fun. There is a wonderful 100 square metre clubhouse and exclusive garden. Books, movies, toys and games are available to borrow and families have access to strollers and babysitting services (extra charge).

There is a KidsOnly program for children aged 4 to 11 onsite and the Teen Tribe initiative offers an engaging itinerary of age-appropriate adventures offsite from rock climbing and go-karting to walking with penguins.

Club style in the city

Pepperclub Hotel & Spa is ideal for families travelling with kids. It has an impressive inner city location and is close to shops and restaurants. The. Hotel has an exclusive beach club at the popular Camps Bay and free shuttle so you can spend time in the city and on the beach effortlessly!

Accommodation is apartment style rooms with kitchenettes and free wifi is offered.

What impresses us most is the facilities – the rooftop swimming pool with city and mountain views, the onsite cinema (that seats just 29 people) and a sensational spa for pampering the parents!

Boutique is best

Cape Town has an impressive array of boutique guesthouses and one of the best-looking and well-bred has to be Welgelegen. The beautiful property is located in Oranjezicht, one of the city’s oldest and prettiest inner-suburbs adjoining the city. There are just thirteen rooms within Welgelegen’s two Victorian houses offering families a wonderful home away from home atmosphere, hearty breakfasts and a great location within walking distance to restaurants and cafes.

There are family superior rooms with up to four beds and a baby cot is available for use in any of the rooms. Babysitting is offered (extra charge)

What impresses us is the plunge pool so kids can still cool down on a hot summer’s day. The only downside is the wooden floors – it’s not great for light sleepers and babies because noise can be magnified. So if  you are going and have light sleepers in the family, we will request you an upstairs room, that’s your best bet to reduce noise.
