Lesotho travel information

Getting There

Lesotho has one international airport in Maseru. There are domestic airports and airfields that connect major towns and destinations. Depending on your arrival time, you may require a night in Maseru if arriving by air.

Passport and Visas

You need a current passport with 6 months validity from the date you return home and two blank pages. No visa is required for Australian passport holders. New Zealand passport holders may visit for up to 14 days without a visa.

Weather and Climate

Lesotho has a temperate climate, largely due to its mountainous topography. Summer (December – February) brings both sunshine and rains; the days and nights warm with temperatures ranging from 15-30°C. Winter (June – August) is cold, with temperatures of 0-19°C and snow in high altitude regions. Rainfall in Lesotho is quite inconsistent and leads to periods of drought in the dry season and flooding in the wet season.

Getting Around

Our Lesotho itineraries involve road transfers from place to place with a private guide and 4×4 vehicle, or self-driving with a 4×4 vehicle. Keep in mind that road conditions can be dangerous in the winter months and can slow you down.

Health

Consult your GP or a travel doctor at least 6 weeks before you travel. You may be required or recommended to get vaccinations for measles, typhoid and hepatitis A & B, among others. Malaria is present in Lesotho, so malaria prophylactics are recommended. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for anyone entering Lesotho from a yellow fever endemic country, including Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Uganda, Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola, as well as South America. You may be denied entry into Lesotho if you don’t have this proof of vaccination, so please carry your certificate with you and present to immigration.

Currency

The local currency is the Lesotho loti (LSL), however the South African Rand is widely accepted and is the preferred currency for tourism. The loti is not accepted outside of Lesotho.

Language

Sesotho and English are the two official languages in Lesotho.
