Samoan community and culture are at the heart of Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa, and have been since it was opened by local Samoan couple Joe and Tui in 1996. As a result, community enrichment and environmental conservation projects are a central part of Sinalei’s mission to give back to the people and land.
Sinalei’s community projects and contributions have ranged from arts and education to medicine and even sport. With the aim of preserving a traditional Samoan art form, Sinalei has championed the local Poutasi Ukulele School. Here young people can learn how to play and build ukuleles, and guests to Sinalei are welcome to visit and enjoy the music. In the same vein, the Poutasi Village Arts Centre was set up, and is a place for the community to create and sell local arts and crafts. Sinalei also supports the village hospital and sponsors the annual Sinalei Rugby Sevens competition.
In line with Sinalei’s farm/ocean to plate principle, the resort sources the majority of its fruit, vegetables, and seafood from surrounding villages. Not only does this provide continual support for local producers, but also guarantees delicious and fresh food for guests.
In an effort to remain as environmentally friendly as possible, Sinalei Resort adheres to the Samoan Conservation Society’s Carbon Off-set initiatives, by developing and maintaining a lush tropical landscape and planting, so far, over 3,000 trees. The resort is also committed to the Pacific Sustainability Monitoring Program, and has been instrumental in declaring Poutasi Village a dedicated Marine Protected area in the hope of safeguarding the reef and its marine life.
In additional to these initiatives, Sinalei Resort is dedicated to various Green initiatives, including the use of solar panels, bamboo straws, sustainable waste disposal, recycling, and much more. This means your stay at Sinalei has as little impact on the local environment as possible.
