Fantastic news! Wilderness Safaris is opening Pelo Camp in a remote section of the Jao Concession on the western boundary of Moremi Game Reserve in the north western Okavango Delta, Botswana safari country!
Pelo Camp is completely eco-friendly with no permanent structures and is ideal for the adventurous traveller wanting a traditional Delta experience.
The camp is set in one of the very best wilderness areas, ideal for spotting elusive and superbly water-adapted sitatunga antelope, red lechwe, hippo and crocodile. Wildlife concentrations within this area depend on the water flow and volume and thus change from season to season. Elephant, wildebeest and impala are prevelent at various times, with lion, buffalo and leopard seen occasionally.
This camp is about the experience of remoteness, Botswana’s abundant birdlife and its diverse wildlife. Given the camp’s location on a small heart shaped island (Pelo aptly means ‘heart’ in Setswana) surrounded by permanent water, activities focus on the mokoro (traditional dug out canoe) excursions in the open, shallow floodplains as well as boating and walking. No game drives take place here because again, the emphasis is on getting away from traffic and the real world! Fishing is also offered seasonally on catch and release basis.
Tents are not dripping with luxury fittings – instead, they are comfortable with bedroom, ensuite bathroom, covered front verandah and outdoor bucket shower with wonderful views over the lagoon. There are flush toilets as well as running water in the basin to ensure absolute comfort!
The main area as a tented dining space and lounge situated under wild date palms, jackalberry and Natal mahogany trees.
There is the quintessential outdoor boma area (fire pit) and a raised platform built on an old termite mound.
