This is a fantastic downhill mountain bike challenge and fun ride that takes place each year on the slopes of Mount Kenya. It raises funds for local communities and conservation efforts on Mount Kenya.
10 to 4 Mountain Bike Challenge
This year, 10 to 4 Mountain Bike Challenge takes place Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd February 2013.
It’s fun for the family as ‘The Slide’ is a gently undulating and pleasant experience that is suitable for beginners, family riders and children. The estimated ride time for this 39 kilometre route is between 1.5 – 4 hours depending on your ability.
The minimum age is 10 years (must be 10 on day of event). Children between 10 and 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times during the event.
It’s a fantastic family event, ideally combined with a family safari holiday in the Masai Mara.
For more experienced riders, there are four other events – Hardcore, Challenge, Extreme and Rush. Hardcore – Held on Day 1 is, as the name suggests, designed to challenge both the fitness as well as the technical prowess of hardcore mountain bikers and elite teams. Covering 90km, riders will face around 1,500 metres (5,000 feet) of climb at high altitude, fast technical descents and single track.
Challenge – Held on Day 2, is an experience that has become synonymous with previous 10 to 4 events. Starting at nearly 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) on the majestic northern slopes of Mount Kenya, riders will descend some 70km over demanding terrain through glorious, indigenous forest, over wide open plains, abundant with wildlife and majestic scenery through the serenity of the Ngare Ndare forest at 1940 metres (6,400 feet).
Extreme – Classifies those riders who choose to ride both the ‘Hardcore’ on Day 1 and the ‘Classic’ on Day 2. Two days of extremely intense mountain biking covering a total of around 160km and 3000 metres of climbing.
Rush – Running concurrently with the ‘Classic’ on Day 2, ‘The Rush’ is a less arduous 56km ride but will still provide exhilaration for mid-level cyclists and those seasoned mountain bikers who spend more time in their office chairs than is good for them. Estimated ride time between 2 and 5 hours depending on ability. Minimum age is 14 years on day of the event.
For international entrants, it’s US$180 – $300 depending on the event.
