Offbeat Safaris is one of Africa’s top mobile riding safari companies. Offbeat’s thirty years experience of organising Riding Safaris throughout Kenya, means there are few companies that can equal their Guides knowledge and expertise.
The team at Offbeat Safaris really understand the passion that our guests have for riding and continue to provide a service which is nothing short of exhilarating, comfortable and most importantly, safe and fun. Horses are well schooled thoroughbreds, all tough and fit. So what are you waiting for?
January proved an incredible month for horseriding safaris at Offbeat Mara.
Guide Tristan headed out to the Mara with a lovely group of 4 riders. The game viewing was exceptional, seeing leopard and rhino from horseback, as well as the rest of the Big Five. In fact they saw 3 different leopard within 18 hours, all in the Offbeat Olare Orok valley – game viewing from horseback has never been so fantastic in the Masai Mara and our 2nd ride is out at the moment, with Anthony Cheffings, who is enjoying fantastic weather and riding with 6 guests. Anthony has led many safaris for us and is not only a superb guide, holding the highest possible gold level of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association, but he is also a skilled and experienced horseman, competing at 3-day events and show-jumping to a high level in Kenya.
Most of the rides alongside the Masai Mara and through the northern ranches are on fairly open plains where you find black cotton soil interspersed with acacia bush. Many areas have short grass plains ideal for riding. Care must be taken for holes but canters and gallops are taken on the open plains.
Good riding ability is important. Guests should be comfortable at all paces, be able to gallop and react quickly and safely – we ride in areas where big game wildlife is abundant. You should be fit enough to ride between 4 and 6 hours a day. The weight limit is 210 lbs or 95 kgs unless special requests are made.
Picnic lunches are carried in saddle bags on days that the camp is moved. Lunch normally lasts 1 – 2 hours with a short siesta. Sometimes if you encounter rough terrain, the guides ensure it’s safe before you then dismount and have to walk.
There are set departures, each one requires a minimum of 4 guests and will never exceed 12 in a riding party unless previously agreed. Plus we offer tailor made riding safaris to suit your own requirements for any agreed number of guests.
English saddles (with a selection of polo, jumping, French trekking and Australian stock). Mainly snaffle bridles
The riding safaris close for April, May and November
