Stunning Babylonstoren is located between Franschhoek and Paarl in the Cape Winelands and the ideal respite from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town. This is a veritable foodies Versailles and a great combination with South Africa’s safari holidays and cosmopolitan Cape Town. Read more.
This stunning accommodation is located between Franschhoek (17 kms) & Paarl (9 kms) in the Cape Winelands, on a farm of 200 hectares and surrounded by the dramatic Simonsberg and Franschhoek Mountains.
The farm dates back to 1690, with original farm structures still beautifully preserved, and a Manor House built in 1777. The 12 rooms (8 x 1 bedroom suites and 4 x 2 bedroom suites) reflect the simplified Cape Dutch architecture of the era, with thatched white washed free standing suites, adorned with simple gables. The interiors are a symphony in white and glass, lending the farmhouse features such as deep red brick fireplaces, deep shuttered windows and open-beamed roofs a stylized edge. The rooms have a charmingly simple Protestant approach typical of that time, which belies the high definition TV’s, ducted air conditioning and DVD players found in every suite. Some rooms have full stainless steel kitchens: there is a spa and a deep pool in a stylishly converted farm reservoir.
This is a farm after all and the magnificent gardens span 2.5 hectares, a veritable foodies Versailles! Organic citrus, vegetables, herbs and vines are used in the restaurant, Babel, which in itself is an experience. Tours are offered with the horticulturists and are recommended.
This is an ideal combination with properties such as Kurland near Plettenberg Bay for self drive holidays or fly in fly out experiences and the Farmhouse at Morukuru in Madikwe for a malaria free safari.
We think this accommodation best suits couples and honeymooners who would feel at home here. Families would be won over by the 2 bedroom suites, the endless space, and the delightful farmyard feel, complete with a “pack” of snail hunting ducks!
To summaries, the Cape Winelands has always done chic well – and now with an organic twist. It’s a property true to its pastoral origins, while competing with the best South Africa has to offer.
