Zanzibar has seen a boom in visitor numbers and as a result, more luxury accommodation has come onto the scene! Here’s a few of our favourites after a recent visit (Dec 2011).
It only gets better on Africa’s Spice Islands
We have always loved Zanzibar for a post safari relax with its beautiful beaches and clear blue waters. However over the last few months this beautiful island has impressed us even further and now offers some incredibly high end world class luxurious resorts, more than ever before!
The Residence lured us into its charms in mid 2011 and has quickly become a very well respected accommodation option for the well travelled VIP guest. Located in a stunning remote pocket of the island, once occupied by the Shirazi Princess, The Residence certainly provides the royal treatment.
Essque Zalu Zanzibar opened on 15 June to incredible reviews and is certainly worthy of the hype. If you close your eyes and try to picture your ultimate beach luxury holiday – this is it ! The summer period was a sellout and it attracted secret celebrity visits too. Sitting at the bar jetty with a mezze plate and a glass of bubbles looking out over the ocean, is one of life’s great moments.
Not only have the beach resorts teased us into planning a return visit, Stone Town has also seen growth and expansion in the luxury department. Mashariki Palace Hotel is a boutique hotel that represents a unique style of accommodation in Stone Town. Once the seat of the Omani Empire around 200 years ago, every room is opulent and intriguing with unique decor featuring carved doors, Arabian beds, sea views, courtyards and private balconies. They have taken the best from the old Zanzibar and displayed it within a modern setting. A very clever combination that results in a wonderful feeling of nostalgic hospitality.
It is the Zanzibar we know and love – the sand is still vibrantly white, the sunset dhow cruise remains romantic and magical, the under water gallery is still bustling with life, the markets of Stone Town are still hard to leave, however the island now has a few more hidden jewels with extra sparkle and shine well worth the discovery on your next luxury holiday.
