The Rwandan government today announced that it plans to increase the cost of a permit to track the endangered mountain gorillas, the country’s main tourist attraction, to $750 from $500 starting June 1, 2012 amid high demand.
“This increase comes at a time when there is significant growth of the gorilla population as well as an increasing demand for gorilla tourism,” a statement from the Rwanda Development Board said today.
“This means that there is need to continue channelling all our efforts in conservation in order to protect their environment as well as the rare species.”
Gorilla permits allows visitors the rare opportunity to trek into thick rainforested mountains in search of the mountain gorilla. When they come to a gorilla troupe, they have one hour to spend observing the primates, estimated to total just 790 worldwide.
Gorillas are concentrated in the Virunga massif that straddles the border between Rwanda, DR Congo and Uganda and are also found in Uganda, in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
We still highly recommend the gorilla experience to any wildlife enthusiast, even if permit prices are increasing from 1st June. As soon as this is absolutely 100% official, we will update this article.
