Mid last year, the ultimate Chobe safari was redefined with the arrival of a new, boutique property – Chobe Water Villas. And it is certainly turning heads.
It is not the first appearance – because from the outside Chobe Water Villas resembles a thatched African lodge which is commonplace throughout Southern Africa safari countries and East Africa safari countries.
It’s the moment you step inside. Imagine a contemporary resort somewhere in paradise and you have the Chobe Water Villas. 17-metre rim flow pool right by the river – if you’ve had a cocktail already and glance quickly at the water you’d swear someone was swimming in the crocodile and hippo infested Chobe River. Rooms are on stilts over the flood plains and water’s edge (depending on water levels), décor is fresh and represents the physical and cultural elements of the region. It was 95% built by local fishermen to ensure the community had ownership from the get go. Each room features 180 degree views and impressively spacious bathrooms with double vanities so you can get ready early morning at the same time! Plus free standing bathtubs and separate rain shower and loo. In your room, there is a mini bar, tea and coffee station, hairdryer, safe, river and sunset viewing terrace and multi plugs for Europe, UK, USA and South Africa making charging a breeze.
What else is special?
Of course, it’s the usual safari schedule of morning and afternoon activities – but in between, it’s the relaxation in Chobe paradise that impresses.
Second to that – Staff are welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere is what they call ‘uncomplicated and relaxed’.
And then there’s the food… wining and dining is enjoyed across the lodge in various zones from the library lounge, bar to the garden terrace and poolside.
A safari isn’t complete without an open air ‘boma’ AKA barbecue African style! And of course our all time favourite a fire pit with comfortable lounges. The African TV is more addictive than an I-Pad… and more social too.
And for guests who can’t disconnect, wifi is free and accessible in all areas. For lovers of shopping the curio and gift shop is very attractive.
So how do I utilise the camp?
Here’s an itinerary for inspiration that combines Chobe Water Villas with two other beautiful, boutique-style properties with an emphasis on community, conservation and uber cool..
