My darling if you were not here with me where is the one place you’d like to be? Africa my girl is where my heart rests. Just one place to choose? I’ll do my best. With paper and pen, I’ll give you my top ten. What’s important to know is in Africa it’s not just the places you go. It’s the people you meet and learning what they know.
Botswana for its beauty, its brilliance and of course Mr Ralph Bousfield and his company, Unchartered Africa – recently voted best safari experience in Africa. Ralph is one of the country’s finest gentlemen and guides. His team of staff all share his passion for Botswana, commitment to conservation and community.

Dragons of the Drakensberg (in South Africa) captured my heart as I shared the experience with family right from the start. Here’s a photo of my beautiful children from November 2016’s visit.
If a Drakensberg holiday is of interest to you, look up Encounters with the Dragon by legendary explorer and photographer John Hone. We’ve got some great holiday gems if you fancy… give us a call.
The Lower Zambezi is always full of surprises and we want to share it with more of our guests in 2017. Our ‘go to’ favourite is owner run Chiawa and Old Mondoro. Owner Grant Cuming is a top guide and top bloke. He’s the one on the right in this great shot taken by Danica on safari there a few years ago. He and a guiding team were pondering the species of a bird that had dipped ever so briefly into the waters in front of our riverside rest stop. The Lower Zambezi combines beautifully with Livingstone (Victoria Falls) and Mfuwe. Check out this tailormade itinerary guests experienced in 2016 and loved! Click to explore.
Sabi Sand and adjoining private reserves in South Africa have a reputation for big five safaris. More than that though, is the beauty of the region, the owner run properties, extra special attention to conservation and good old hospitality. What’s great is spending a week in the region across two properties in different private reserves. We love combining Timbavati with Sabi Sand. Here’s Danica at Tanda Tula Field Camp. Check out our favourite itinerary combinations here.
Malaria free safari we are often asked for by families and older travellers to avoid taking medication. Madikwe in South Africa is one of our favourites because it’s a great landscape, awesome wildlife and stunning owner run and even community partnership properties like Thakadu. Now a few hours away from Madikwe is the lesser known yet visually striking Marakele National Park. We have begun combining the two with outstanding results. Check out this tailormade itinerary.
There are nine UNESCO world heritage sites, stunning remote owner run lodges in far away mountains, imperial past with 13th century churches of Lalibela, hewn from solid rock, and the hill castles of Gondar just to name a few highlights. Here’s an itinerary we’ve tailored before. Here’s something to get the tastebuds tantalised.
We get asked all the time for unique Africa safari holidays with luxury beach holiday finales. This year, it’s Malawi time… and we’re sailing, it’s sunset and the lake is truly glistening…. It combines beautifully with Zambia safari holidays. One of our favourite properties is owner run Kaya Mawa which is on the paradise of Likoma Island. Kaya Mawa Lodge is on the southwestern tip set amid rocks above a beautiful beach. Here you can enjoy barefoot luxury, freshwater diving, snorkelling, sailing and the highlight has to be village and community interaction. Don’t forget to explore the island on foot and bike. Here’s a tailormade safari holiday we’ve designed before.
When you’re seeking remoteness it’s got to be West Tanzania. What’s there? Well you have to check out Katavi for its safari and Mahale for its chimpanzees in the wild. This combination alone sees you on game drives, walking safaris, fly camping, boating and chimpanzee trekking in the Mahale Mountain forest.
You’ll need a week here and for the best weather and wildlife, July to October. Yet for excellent value, go shoulder season so June and November. Here’s an itinerary you’ll love to see.
Namibia holidays are one of our specialties as Africa safari specialists. The popular options in the past have been exploring Namibia self drive holiday style, flying safaris and privately guided safaris.
This year we go remote, we get you out under canvas with private guide, camp crew and immersed in Namibia wilderness like never before.
Last but certainly not least on our #AfricaToDoList for 2017 is the Magic of Madagascar. We tell our guests it’s tough travel because it’s 50 years behind mainland Africa safari holidays. Infrastructure is not as great, roads are bad, distances long and accommodation not to the same luxurious level. All of that is slowly improving and over time, Madagascar will grow to be a thriving metropolis for tourists. Right now, it’s for the mavericks of the adventure travel world. There are so many amazing landscapes to explore, unique wildlife to witness and friendly, fascinating people to meet. Here’s a few itineraries we’ve designed in 2016.
